Why Go Abroad
Broaden your horizons
Teaching is one of the few professions where you
can literally work your way around the world,
while growing both professionally and
personally.
You will learn new occupation-specific skills by
teaching a new curriculum and being exposed to
best practice from fellow teachers who hail from
countries around the world. International
schools attract a certain kind of teacher, and
usually the staff in your new school will be
similar to yourself: welcoming, outgoing,
open-minded, adventurous, interested in travel
and in experiencing new cultures.
Most international schools are private
institutions and usually have fewer discipline
problems, with smaller class sizes and a more
academic focus compared to standard state
schools. Of course there will be pressure, such
as parents having high expectations because they
pay for their children’s education and expect
results.
But you can relax as well. Through living and
working in a new region, you will be able to
travel cheaply to nearby countries during
weekends and term breaks. Working abroad
provides an excellent opportunity to save and
invest money. Visit the
money matters page for
more information. If you are adaptable,
open-minded, professional and dedicated,
teaching abroad might be just what you are
looking for.
